Milestones aren’t just about ticking off a checklist as a baby grows and develops, for us, it is about a PATTERN of movement. Paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists are trained to identify abnormal or atypical movement patterns using specific tools, such as the Prechtl’s, Movement ABC or HINE assessments. It is then our job to rehabilitate or educate parents and caregivers as how to facilitate appropriate movements patterns. How a baby moves in early infancy can predict outcomes for later in life and therefore one of the reasons why early intervention is so imperative for quality of life.
